My (Current) Political Stances: (I'm an American, just so you're aware of where my perspective is coming from)
IMHO, no political party, candidate, or side of the political spectrum will be 100% right 100% of the time. I consider the most ideal political system to run the country would be something akin to the Australian-style parliament, with it's alternative voting system. However, I would also be more for a libertarian interpretation of individual and state's rights. I also think, for the sake of improved international relations, and to modify the warped patriotic ideal, the US should apply for membership into the Commonwealth Realms (as, historically, we should be eligible).
Ultimately, I think the UN should be replaced with an international system which would look like a mix between the EU and the Commonwealth Realms- essentially looking like a giant India, if you are familiar with their political system. This is NOT, however, to suggest that I believe the more social programs imposed by the EU are economically viable, desirable, or sustainable in the long term. Again, for each nation, I would advocate a more libertarian level of individual freedom, with people simply being united for their common interests.
Abortion- Right to chose.
Gun Control- Make gun sellers more legally responsible and accountable for who they sell guns to, and by proxy, where those guns might eventually end up. It may eventually become more expensive, but sellers will start taking more precautions on their own- making people take classes, having longer background checks, etc. if they know they can be sued or shut down because something happened with one of their guns.
Gay Marriage- Pro.
Separation of Church and State- Yes, but I think it is important to realize that, individually, arrogant anti-theists can be just as dangerous as arrogant theists; and if they had the same numbers and opportunities- the outcome would be just as bad. A level balance is what is important.
Euthanasia- A person's life is, in the end, all they truly own. It's their choice.
Death Penalty- You wouldn't keep a dog in a kennel it's entire life and call it humane. I fail to see how treating a human in a worse fashion than a dog is considered any less. Further, criminals can and do commit plenty of crimes while in prisons.
Affirmative Action- In the US, at least, within 30 years or so, white people will become a minority (both compared to all other groups combined, and Latinos individually). When that happens, will we be eligible? I don't think so. So "no".
Campaign Reforms- Severe cutback, if not total elimination, of "pork barrel spending" and lobbyists. Legislative and Judicial term limits.
Crime- Harsher penalties, less appeals for repeat and harsher crimes. Legalize and regulate drugs and "victimless crimes".
Immigration- Crack down on illegals, make it easier for legal residents to become citizens.
Environment- Sign on to Kyoto and other protocols, begin campaign to grow ethanol creating plants to lead to eventual national-level conversion of vehicles.
Trade- Leave WTO, IMF, and World Bank. They cause more international suffering than they help. Reintroduce the American (National) System of economic policy.
The Poor- limit welfare, make it mandatory for all severely mentally disabled homeless to be placed into government regulated institutions. It would be more of a crime to let them die out in the elements, and if they were capable of rationally choosing between "lost rights", and being cared for, which do you think they'd chose?
Military- Close down unnecessary international bases, and instill a mandatory 2 year draft for all citizens 18 and up, to promote responsibility, nationalism, and proper health.
Random Thoughts:
People in America have learned to live with the fact that our government has done some less than scrupulous things, completely behind our backs- Project MKULTRA, Tuskegee Experiments, The Gulf of Tonkin Incident (amongst numerous even more "incredible" actions taken around the world during the Cold War), and yet, when such notions as domestic assassinations and the War on Terror (not that they weren't lying about WMDs or the like, but that they might have been involved in some way, or had prior knowledge) are brought up, they are simply dismissed as nutty.
Plenty of evil men work only for their own benefits, even at the cost of others. The most dangerous, however, never even have to lift a finger to get the work done.
